Nissan Results for July 2001

Tokyo - Nissan Motor Company reported today production, sales and export figures for July, 2001.  For the month, global production declined 12.8%, while total unit sales for the three main regions, including Japan, North America and Europe were down 3.9%.

Production
Nissan's global production in July declined for the sixth straight month to 198,542 units, down 12.8% from a year ago.

Domestic production in July was 115,393 units, down 6.9% from a year ago, mainly due to decreased exports to the U.S..  However, production for the domestic market increased to meet continued demand of the new models launched after NRP.

Nissan's overseas production in July 2001 totaled 83,149 units, down 20.5% from July 2000.

Production in the U.S. decreased 41.5%, representing the first year-on-year decrease in two months, as demand in the compact truck segment remained weak and the company ended the current Altima production as it prepares to launch an all new Altima in September.  Mexican production fell 13.0% due to the decreased demand of vehicles for the U.S. market.  In Europe, UK production fell 17.7% due to the lower demand for key volume vehicles, while Spain increased 5.9% to meet increased demand for the Almera Tino and the Terrano II.

In other regions production decreased 28.4% in July, with decreased demand of key volume models in Taiwan.

Sales
Nissan's domestic sales for July 2001 rose 7.8% to 72,518 units, marking the eighth consecutive month of year-on-year increases.  Sales remained strong for the models launched after NRP, including the new Skyline, launched in June, and the Liberty which underwent a minor change in May.  Nissan's domestic market share was 18.6%, up 0.4 point from last year.

Nissan's sales in the U.S. declined by 17.8% from July 2000.  While the market remains slow in a sluggish economy, Nissan continues to hold incentives low despite aggressive competition in many segments.  Sales for the Xterra, however, improved from the same month of last year.  Sales in Canada increased 4.9%, driven by strong demand for the Sentra, and Mexican sales jumped 16.8%, with strong sales of the Tsuru for the Mexican market.

Nissan's sales in Europe decreased by 7.0%.  Despite the continuing strong demand for the Almera Tino and the solid sales of the Micra, slow sales in Germany continue to affect Nissan's sales.

Exports from Japan
Nissan's exports in July 2001 decreased 17.4% to 49,693 units.  Exports were down due primarily to the decreased exports to the U.S. of slow market, and Nissan's ongoing policy of producing vehicles in the markets where they are sold.  In July, however, full-scale exports of the X‑TRAIL started, and the great fall of exports on year-on-year basis is coming to stop.
