Nissan sponsors the Explore4Knowledge Soweto2Sodwana sustainable seafood expedition

Explore4Knowledge, World Wildlife Fund-Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative and Nissan South Africa team up to support ocean conservation

ROSSLYN, South Africa – Nissan South Africa (SA) has an extensive history of supporting conservation across the country and is involved with a variety of environmental organizations that have been doing much-needed work to preserve and rehabilitate our natural resources.

A passionate wildlife champion, Nissan sponsored the Explore4Knowledge/World Wildlife Fund-South Africa (WWF-SA) #Soweto2Sodwana expedition, which involved two talented young chefs making their way from the sizzling streets of Soweto to the beautiful beaches of Sodwana Bay and Durban to understand where seafood comes from and how to sustain it.

Thanks to Nissan SA, the intrepid adventurers travelled in the superlative comfort of three Nissan Navara Double Cabs to ensure they reached their destination ready to learn about sustainable seafood. As the 2016 International Pickup of the Year, Navara is the ultimate road-trip vehicle and is perfect for this expedition that explores the importance of protecting environmental resources.

The chefs on the journey – Terror Lekopa and Freedom Khanyile, together with Explore4Knowledge and the WWF-SA Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) – embarked on this journey to educate the chefs and South Africans about the beauty, and value of our oceans. This is part of the WWF-SASSI's strategy to get young chefs to become amabassadors for the ocean who will champion sustainable seafood and ocean conservation in Gauteng.

The expedition took place from March 3-8, but you can still follow the #Soweto2Sodwana adventure on social media. The team snorkelled the coral reefs of Kosi Bay, met local fishers and rangers, interacted with turtles and sharks and underwent WWF-SASSI training to learn more about ocean conservation – with sustainable seafood pracrices being the primary learning.

The Soweto2Sodwana idea was conceived at a WWF-SASSI networking partners meeting by John Lucas, Founder of Explore4Knowledge. The expedition materialised through a partnership between Explore4Knowledge and WWF-SASSI, made possible through WWF-SASSI's key funders UNEP 10YF Program and WWF-SA Nedbank Green Trust.
