Nissan global production and sales results for CY2000

Tokyo -- Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced its global production and sales results for CY2000. Nissan's global production was up 9.8% to 2,605,155 units, representing the first year-on-year increase in three years, while global sales in CY2000 totaled 2,629,044 units, up 4.6% from CY1999.

1. Global Production (from January to December, 2000)
Nissan's production in Japan was 1,324,427 units down 4.4% from CY1999, due to sluggish domestic sales and the company's efforts to localize production where demand rises.
North American production increased 35.2% to 690,066 units for the year with Mexico up 68.4% from CY1999 due to the improvement of the economy in Mexico and strong demand for export to the U.S. market. Nissan's production in the U.S. increased 16.2% to 377,275 units, mainly led by the Xterra and the Frontier.
In Europe, production was 464,599 units, up 25.3% over CY1999. Production was up 20.9% in the U.K. and up 37.5% in Spain to supply the demand for the new Almera and Almera Tino, whose production was localized earlier in the year.
Production in other markets totaled 126,063, an increase of 18.5% over CY 1999.

2. Global Sales (from January to December, 2000)
Nissan's sales in Japan totaled 729,739 units, down 5.7% from the previous year, as market share of 17.8%, down 1.6 points from the previous year. Nissan sales were mediocre for the first six months with the lack of any new models. Nissan introduced the Bluebird Sylphy on August 30, and it has remained the top selling model in the M class sedan since. The X‑TRAIL also launched on November 13 with a strong start.
In North America, the company sold 974,074 vehicles, up 14.4%. Strong growth for Nissan and Infiniti Divisions bolstered Nissan's sales in the U.S. as the company sold 752,088 units, up 11.1% versus CY 1999. Nissan Division sales for 2000 totaled 673,737, up 11.4% from CY1999, including record-breaking light truck sales led by Xterra and Frontier. Infiniti Division marked its best calendar year sales with 78,351, up 7.9% over CY1999. Sales in Canada were 47,404 units, up 25.1% from CY1999, with the best sales in the past 13 years and Mexican sales increased 28.3% with record sales of 173,066 units. For the fourth straight year, the Nissan Tsuru remained the best selling car in Mexico.
Nissan sold 533,025 units in Europe, a 3.4% year-on-year increase despite an overall decline in the market. The company saw strong sales of the new Almera and the new Almera Tino, as well as an increase in Terrano II and the Pickup sales.
In other global markets Nissan sold 392,206 vehicles up 5.5% over CY 1999. In Asia and Oceania sales rose 8.0% year-on-year as markets are on the way recovering from the 1997 Asian financial crisis.
