Nissan production, sales and export results for July 2003

Tokyo -- Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., today announced production, sales and export figures for July. Nissan's overseas production reached a record 122,096 units for the month, a year-on-year increase of 41.1%.

Production

Global production in July surpassed that of July 2002, posting a 20.1% year-on-year increase to reach 261,195 units.

July domestic production showed a year-on-year increase of 6.3% at 139,099 units. The increase in shipments for the domestic market was driven principally by the July launch of the new Presage minivan and the new Cube. Also contributing to the increase were the Japan and North America-bound Fairlady Z (U.S. name: 350Z), the new Murano SUV and Infiniti G35 (Skyline in Japan) for the North American market, the X‑TRAIL for Europe and other overseas markets, and the Sunny, which Nissan sells in China and other parts of the Asian region.

Overseas production hit a record for July of 122,096 units, a year-on-year increase of 41.1%.

In the United States, production of the new Quest at the Canton Plant and the new Maxima at the Smyrna Plant went into full swing, which, added to the maintenance of a high level of sales for the Altima and other models, resulted in an output increase of 41,684 units, a near doubling (+93.0%) from last July and a new monthly production record.

Output in Mexico was 22,663 units, an increase of 2.7% over July 2002, on the strength of Sentra sales.

Production in the United Kingdom totaled 28,194 units, a significant increase of 38.3% compared to the same month last year.

Spain output figures rose 27.9% from the previous July to 10,836 units, thanks in part to the contribution of the Primastar commercial vehicle.

In other regions, strong sales of the Zhengzhou Nissan-made new Paladin SUV in China contributed to a leap in production of 133.6% from July last year, to 8,138 units.

Sales

Domestic registrations in July showed year-on-year growth of 5.5%, rising to 78,686 units. New models continued to sell well, especially the new Presage, launched at the end of July; the X‑TRAIL, which underwent a minor upgrade in June; and the new Cube launched last year.

Nissan's July domestic market share excluding mini vehicles was 21.3%, up 1.0 point compared to the same month last year.

Domestic sales for July, including mini vehicles, increased 1.1% over the same month last year, to 81,013 units. Nissan's domestic market share for the month, including mini vehicles, was 15.4%, a 0.2 point increase over July 2002.

In the United States, July sales showed significant year-on-year growth of 10.1% at 68,602 units. The Infiniti division recorded 10,816 sales for a rise of 43.5%, another monthly record. Nissan saw sales growth of 5.6%, selling 57,786 units with growth driven by Altima, Murano and the 350Z.

Sales in Canada rose 20.8% to 6,036 units, while Mexican sales were up 10.3% for the month at 20,013.

Sales in Europe climbed a year-on-year 14.7% to 45,660 units, powered by strong sales for the new Micra launched in January and the X‑TRAIL imported from Japan.

Exports from Japan

July exports declined 2.7% from last July to 55,994 units.

Shipments to North America were down a year-on-year 19.3% to 19,637 units due to the change to local production of the Maxima early in the year.

Exports to Europe and Latin America benefited from strong sales of the X‑TRAIL in particular. European exports grew a year-on-year 3.8% to 8,369 units, and Latin American exports increased 40.3% to 4,564 units.

Shipments to China also showed impressive growth, with a year-on-year 92.9% increase in volume to 4,598 units.
