Nissan production, sales and export results for August 2003

Tokyo - Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., today announced sales, production and export figures for August.

Production

Nissan's global production in August totaled 224,481 units, marking a year-on-year increase of 5.1%.

Domestic production for the month came to 105,042 units, up 6% compared with a year earlier. Among domestic models, higher production volumes were seen especially for the new Presage minivan released in July and for the new Cube and the Cube Cubic. Other models contributing to the increased output included the Fairlady Z (350Z in North America) for the Japanese and North American markets; the Murano crossover SUV, the Infiniti FX45/FX35 premium crossover SUVs and the Infiniti G35 (Skyline in Japan), all marketed in North America; the X-TRAIL for the domestic market and various overseas markets, particularly Europe; and the Sunny for China and other Asian markets.

Nissan's overseas production in August reached the highest level ever for this month, setting a record of 119,439 units and posting a gain of 4.2% over the same month last year.

Production in the U.S. set a monthly record of 50,808 units, posting a year-on-year gain of 35.5%.  In addition to increased production volumes for the new Quest at the Canton Plant and for the Maxima at the Smyrna Plant, among other models, another major contributor was the Altima, which has continued to maintain high sales levels. However, in Mexico, production came to 29,195 units, down 17.5% compared with a year earlier on account of the fall-off in sales of the Platina.

In the U.K., the overall production volume decreased 15.7% from the same month last year to total 21,022 units, owing mainly to decreased output of the Primera and the Almera despite higher production of the Micra. Production in Spain rose to 2,675 units, up 22.5% over a year earlier, due largely to the contribution of the Primastar commercial vehicle.

Sales

Nissan's domestic registrations in August totaled 46,974 units, up 5.6% compared with the same month last year. Newly released models continued their strong sales performance, notably the new Presage released at the end of July and the Cube that was rolled out in October last year. Nissan's share of the domestic registered vehicle market in August stood at 19.1%, a 1.5-point increase over August 2002.

Including minicars, Nissan's August sales in Japan totaled 49,957 units, posting a year-on-year gain of 4.4%. Nissan's domestic market share, including the minicar segment, was 14.1% in August, up 1.0 point over a year earlier.

In the U.S., Nissan recorded year-on-year sales growth of 10.1%, advancing to 80,820 units. The Infiniti Division saw its sales jump 53.7% over a year earlier to set a single-month sales record of 12,988 units. The Nissan Division also increased its vehicle sales to 67,832 units, up 4.4% over the same month last year, driven by higher sales volumes for the new Quest, Murano and the 350Z. Sales in Canada advanced 16.8% over a year ago to total 5,815 units, while sales in Mexico dipped 0.7% to 17,002 units.

In Europe, sales rose 8.8% over August 2002 to reach 30,594 units.  The Micra released at the end of January and the X-TRAIL exported from Japan continued to contribute to the sales increase.

Exports from Japan

Nissan's exports in August came to 48,421 units, down 9.2% from a year earlier. Shipments to the U.S. declined 37.7% to 13,723 units, owing to the switchover to local production of the Maxima in February this year. Exports to Europe remained strong, driven especially by shipments of the X-TRAIL, to total 7,276 units for year-on-year growth of 22.9%. In addition, shipments to China soared 289.3% to reach 3,885 units.
