Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., today announced the recycling fees that customers will be required to pay when they purchase a Nissan vehicle as of Jan. 1, 2005 when Japan's Automobile Recycling Law takes effect. The recycling fees vary according to model and comprise the fees for recycling the vehicle's automobile shredder residue (ASR), airbags and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
The recycling fee is not built into the price of the vehicle and must be paid separately upon the purchase of the car. Customers who purchased a Nissan vehicle before Jan. 1, 2005, must pay the fee when they take their vehicle for its first mandatory vehicle inspection as required by law, or when they decide to scrap their car. In the case of leased cars, the leasing company must pay the recycling fee.
The fee for recycling ASR is based on the volume of shredder residue (the material left after metals are recovered) of each model, while the airbag fee is based on the number of components in a particular vehicle's airbag system, which includes the airbag, seatbelt pretensioner and other components. The fee for recycling CFCs have been set at 2,120 yen for all passenger and commercial vehicles, except for some buses, such as the Nissan Civilian, which are higher.
Below is a chart of the recycling fees for some of Nissan's major models.
