Nissan to Exhibit EV-Related Systems at CEATEC JAPAN 2012

  • Exhibits include the "LEAF to Home" power supply system and a demonstration of new "LEAF to Community" system which can power streetlights
  • Nissan to demonstrate automated driving with the prototype NSC-2015 vehicle remote monitoring system

YOKOHAMA, Japan (October 1, 2012) - Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced its participation in CEATEC JAPAN 2012, an annual exhibition showcasing cutting-edge electronic and information technologies. As one of its technologies on display at this year's CEATEC, Nissan will demonstrate automated driving technology as part of its vision for future mobility and society brought about by the introduction of electric vehicles (EVs). CEATEC 2012 will be held at the Makuhari Messe convention center near Tokyo from October 2 to 6.

At CEATEC 2011, in response to the experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Nissan showcased its “Stand-alone Energy Community" with the LEAF to Home (V2H) system, which can supply electricity from batteries onboard Nissan LEAF EVs to residential homes. This year, the LEAF to Home (V2H) system – which is now on sale – will be shown along with the “LEAF to Community" system which can power streetlights in the event of an emergency or power failure. Nissan will also display various electric vehicles and other models that will be brought to market in the future.

Exhibit overview:
1. Exhibits

Prototype "NSC-2015": based on EVs with next-generation IT and automated driving functions installed

Nissan will participate in CEATEC's Smart Mobility ZERO exhibition by demonstrating automated driving using the NSC-2015 vehicle. This car adopts a remote monitoring system that recognizes the surrounding environment through use of an all-around view camera and 4th generation (4G) mobile communications. Different from a system using GPS to determine the car's location, this system provides a precise recognition of the surrounding environment (even in underground parking lots) and makes use of various smartphone applications.
For example, after the driver exits the NSC-2015, it starts to park itself automatically , following the instructions given by smartphone. The vehicle looks for a vacant parking space while identifying its surroundings; once it detects an open parking space automated parking begins. The driver can also use smartphone commands to make the NSC-2015 vehicle leave the parking space and return to the place where he or she is. While parked, the car's security camera system automatically works with a camera installed in the vehicle. If the system detects suspicious behavior, the driver is alerted automatically by a report to his or her smartphone.

LEAF to Home and LEAF to Community
Nissan will exhibit the LEAF to Home power supply system with the EV Power Station (made by Nichicon Corporation) that is currently on sale. This power transfer system enables electricity stored in high-capacity lithium-ion batteries onboard a Nissan LEAF to be sent to an ordinary home by connecting the car to the home's electricity distribution panel with a connector linked to the LEAF's quick charging port. This system uses a Nissan LEAF to store and supply electricity, which helps to balance out the demands on the electrical supply system by storing electricity during the night when the demand is low and supplying it to homes during daytime when the demand is high. It can even help lower an electricity bill as prices are more expensive during daytime. Nissan will also conduct demonstrations of the LEAF to Community system, where street lights in the Smart Mobility ZERO zone are illuminated using electricity stored in a Nissan LEAF.

EV Lineup
At the Smart Mobility ZERO zone, Nissan will display an EV lineup that includes the Nissan New Mobility Concept, an ultra-compact two-seater electric vehicle; the Nissan LEAF 5-passenger hatchback EV; the e-NV200, a commercial electric vehicle; and e-Atlas, an electrically powered truck. Also to be displayed is an inexpensive quick charger system that conforms to CHAdeMO charging standards.

2. Presentation
Mitsuhiko Yamashita, executive vice president in charge of R&D at Nissan, will participate in a panel discussion about "The first ride of the robot car: the world of autonomous driving opened up by EVs" with academics, and moderated by Taro Kimura, a well-known journalist.
