Nissan Announces Global Nissan, A New World Headquarters
-- Lean Global Management Team --
Tokyo -- Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced today the creation of a world-wide corporate headquarters organization called Global Nissan (GNX). The organization will be a lean and focused global headquarters with clear responsibilities and drawing fewer than 200 members from the company's operations worldwide. GNX will operate cross-functionally and be gradually implemented beginning on September 25, 2000.
GNX focus will be on a limited number of missions, as well as major projects, including: strategic leadership, innovation and business development, corporate and brand identity management, capital allocation and control, management of global personnel and key skills as well as overall control throughout the company. GNX will also provide leadership to regions and global functions within the company from a corporate perspective as well as empower operational units to handle business plan decisions and to manage their implementation.
In addition, to clearly distinguish GNX from regional operations and ensure appropriate focus on Japan and General Overseas Markets (GOM*), Management Committees, similar to the existing ones in North America and Europe, will be established. Management Committee-Japan, a decision making body chaired by Carlos Ghosn, President, includes members from each function empowered to make decisions for Japan. It will be accountable for the region's profitability and market presence. Management Committee-GOM will be regularly chaired by Norio Matsumura, EVP, and quarterly by Mr. Ghosn, and includes members from functions and major sales areas.
The small size of GNX and focus on cross functional activities will allow it to be flexible and to enhance the speed and quality of decision making. The company will utilize the latest information technology to create a global network, linking resources and skilled staff members from around the world to be a part of the headquarters. "In a company operating worldwide, we need to stretch performance globally." said Carlos Ghosn, President of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. "Our aim is to create a competitive global Japanese company for the 21st century within the Alliance with Renault."
On March 16, 2000, Nissan announced the streamlining of its operational management including the creation of Management Committees in North America and Europe. The company also reorganized its operations along functional lines including research and development, purchasing, manufacturing, finance, sales and marketing and product development.
Creating value above and beyond global functions and regional operations, GNX is the determinant step in the move from a multi-regional to a global company devoted to lasting profitable growth. as announced in Nissan Revival Plan on October 18, 1999.
* GOM: Markets other than Japan, North America, and Europe
