Nissan designers in Brazil pick the best student-made designs

Automotive styling professionals at Nissan Design’s Latin America studio picked the top three designs made by students of the Istituto Europeo di Design in Brazil.

RIO DE JANEIRO – The inaugural class of the Nissan-sponsored Automotive Design course at Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Brazil finished the year-long course by submitting their top designs to the Automotive stylists at Nissan Design Latin America in São Paulo.

Nissan challenged the students to create designs in two categories: an electric race car for the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2050, and a compact B-segment for the near future.

Nissan designers selected the top three designs in each category. Students Pedro Morassutti, Paulo Oliveira and Ivor Braga created the three winning designs for the electric race car of the future. In the second category, designers selected the creations of students Felipe Mazzeo, Pedro Arká and Henrique Lohmann.

The six students will visit the Nissan Design Latin America headquarters, otherwise known as The Box. Located in São Paulo, Nissan's styling studio aims to serve as a creative laboratory for designers to think of solutions for the future of mobility from the design perspective. During the student's visit, Nissan designers will give advice on the future of the profession.

"It is always important to be in touch with the younger generations to understand their passions and desires", said John Sahs, chief designer at the Nissan Design Latin America studio. "Our designers have tutored the students throughout this year. We want to follow the progress of future talents closely."

Collaboration between Nissan and IED

Nissan has a long history of partnership with the Istituto Europeo di Design in Brazil. In 2011, the Japanese car manufacturer sponsored the first IED Automotive Design Course in São Paulo. Under the supervision of the brand's styling professionals, eight students were challenged to create cars for Nissan's 2025 range. At the conclusion of the course the students submitted their proposals to Shiro Nakamura, then Nissan's head of Global Design, and Alfonso Albaisa, senior vice president for Global Design for Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.

In 2014, Taro Ueda, then vice president of Nissan Design Americas (NDA), visited Brazil for the opening of the Nissan Satellite Design Studio. At the IED in Rio de Janeiro, he organized workshops and presented to 70 students.

Last year, Nissan and IED joined forces to offer scholarships to young Brazilian designers who could not afford to pay the total cost of the Automotive Design course.
