Nissan Releases Environmental Report 2000

Tokyo -- Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. released today its Environmental Report 2000 , which comprises the results of the company's environmental efforts in fiscal 1999 and objectives for fiscal 2000.

This report has expanded the company's scope of reporting to encompass its major consolidated subsidiaries, including overseas manufacturing bases, and has also added philanthropic activities and other societal issues to bring it to more in line with the global trend of making sustainability reports. Moreover, facts and figures such as environmental data on vehicles, environmental accounting, and PERT (Pollutant Release and Transfer Register) have been improved and expanded.

Nissan established the Environmental Management Committee in March 1993 and completed the acquisition of ISO14001 certifications on a global level, and has thus continued to improve its environmental management structure. In order to ensure compliance with global standards and further promote information disclosure, the company last year started using the Environment Agency's "Guidelines for Preparation of Environmental Reports" and GRI's (^*Global Reporting Initiative) "Sustainability Reporting Guidelines (and Draft) as references in preparing the Environmental Report, and it plans to continue issuing the publication every year.

The following are the improvements over the Environmental Report 1999.

1. The scope of reporting has been expanded to cover the company's major consolidated subsidiaries, including overseas manufacturing bases.
2. Reports on the company's philanthropic endeavors, safety and hygiene management activities, and other society-oriented efforts have been added.
3. Using the Environment Agency's "Toward Environmental Accounting System" (May 2000) as a reference, the company's scope of data collection for environmental accounting has been broadened to include consolidated subsidiaries. In addition, information on cost savings related to environmental protection measures and reductions of environment impacting substances has been disclosed.
4. More extensive data have been provided, including environmental data on vehicles (trend of average fuel economy, exhaust emissions, qualitative data on external vehicle noise, and environmental data by model, etc.), PERT, and environmental data on the individual plants of major domestic and overseas vehicle and component manufacturing companies.
   
   ^* Global Reporting Initiative is an entity seeking to develop globally acceptable guidelines for making company-wide sustainability reports and has the participation of corporations, NGOs, organizations of certified public accountants, universities, consultants, etc.
