Nissan hosts 26th annual wheelchair race in Yokosuka, Japan

YOKOHAMA, Japan – Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. will host its 26th annual national wheelchair race, the Nissan Cup Oppama Championship, on December 7 in Yokosuka City, Japan. The event aims to promote disability sports, strengthen regional revitalization, and support the creation of a more inclusive society. It also plays a key role in nurturing current and future Paralympic athletes.

This year’s championship will take place at the Oppama Plant’s GRANDRIVE test course, welcoming more than 80 athletes from across Japan – from seasoned Paralympians to first-time competitors. Participants will competie in 3-km, 5-km and half marathon distance races.

One of the race’s distinguishing features is its inclusive structure. It is among the few events in Japan where athletes of all ages and abilities – elementary school students to adults, with or without disabilities – can compete together. Over the years, the event has helped develop numerous athletes who have gone on to represent Japan at the Paralympic Games.

In addition, on December 5 Nissan will host a wheelchair experience and exchange program for local elementary school students. This initiative introduces children to adaptive sports and encourages empathy and the value of coexistence through play.
