Nissan e.dams building pace ahead of Formula E New York City E-Prix

YOKOHAMA, Japan
– Nissan e.dams is back racing on New York City’s Red Hook Circuit in Brooklyn – the venue for Nissan’s first Formula E race win, in season five – buoyed by a strong performance at the previous race in Mexico. Another season seven race double-header, will see the all-electric racers contest rounds 10 and 11 of the 2020/21 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, on an exciting but unforgiving street track with impressive views of Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.

Last time out at round nine, the Puebla E-Prix, Nissan e.dams team driver Oliver Rowland took pole position and a podium, showing improved pace with the new Nissan Gen2 Formula E powertrain. The team is still working hard to build pace and consistency with both its drivers, with Sebastien Buemi looking to push hard in a bid to take the top step of the podium in New York City again.

“We land in beautiful New York City with strong momentum from Mexico,” said Tommaso Volpe, Nissan’s global motorsports director. “Oli’s pole and podium shows us that we’ve got the speed and efficiency we need from our new Nissan Gen2 powertrain, so we must build on our performance in Puebla here in New York. Our Gen2 powertrain is the result of continued cross-business collaboration between our road car and Formula E engineers. The advancements we make in Formula E help drive the development of our future electric road vehicles."

Nissan races in this world championship to bring the excitement and fun of zero-emission electric vehicles to a global audience. As part of its goal to achieve carbon neutrality across its operations and the life cycle of its products by 2050, Nissan intends to electrify all-new Nissan vehicle offerings by the early 2030s in key markets. Nissan aims to bring its expertise in transferring knowledge and technology between the racetrack and road for better electric vehicles for customers.

First introduced in the U.S. for the 2010 model year, more than 500,000 Nissan LEAFs have been sold worldwide. For 2021, LEAF is available in two versions – LEAF and the extended-range LEAF PLUS. Ariya – Nissan's first all-electric crossover– will be available in the U.S. starting next year and represents the next chapter for Nissan electric vehicles.

“Our result from Mexico puts the team on the right performance trajectory for New York, but we are not quite where we want to be yet,” said Olivier Driot, co-team principal of Nissan e.dams. “Seb’s lights-to-flag victory here in season five inspires us to push even harder for the full team performance we know both our drivers and cars are capable of.”

Driver Quotes

Oliver Rowland

“It was great to get our first pole position and podium of season seven in Mexico, and it feels like we are beginning to build speed and confidence with every race now. Our new Nissan Gen2 powertrain is clearly fast, and I am working well with the car and my engineers. We just need to make sure our consistency matches our pace and the results will come. I’m really excited to race again in New York City.”

Sebastien Buemi

“My P7 in qualifying in Mexico shows some improvement in our pace, but the race results are not what we would want or expect. I’m working hard with the team and my engineers to understand how to unlock the performance we know the car has, and I’ll be using all my racing experience and knowledge of this great Brooklyn track to score points this weekend.”
