Today there are plenty of visions for the future of mobility, with the overwhelming consensus that it will be electric. But it is one thing to sell a vision. Successfully building and delivering electric vehicles to the mass market is an entirely different challenge. It's also an area where Nissan has the industry's longest record of success.
In 2010, Nissan pioneered the very idea of a mass-market electric vehicle with the launch of the first-generation LEAF. Nissan LEAF remains the world's best-selling EV, with more than 300,000 sold and billions of miles driven without a single major battery incident. Last month — as promised — we began sales of the all-new 2018 LEAF. We're now producing the new LEAF at three world-class manufacturing plants: Oppama, Japan; Smyrna, Tennessee (U.S.); and Sunderland (U.K.)
Of course, volume isn't the lone metric in what makes a successful automaker. But it is a testament to Nissan's know-how in building cars, SUVs, and EVs at a scale that allows them to be affordable, reliable, and safe. The fact that we selected three global plants to deliver Nissan's most technologically advanced electric vehicles reflects our confidence and commitment to EV leadership. Only with a solid foundation can we realize our bold vision for the future.
