Tokyo -- Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., today announced production, sales and export figures for June and the first half of calendar year 2004.
Nissan's global production in the first half of 2004 rose 11.9% compared with the same period last year to 1,606,404 units, a record high for a six-month period. Domestic production, overseas production, domestic sales and exports were also higher compared with the first half of last year.
Production
Nissan's global production in June advanced 8.3% compared with the same month a year earlier to 269,180 units.
Production in Japan rose 3% to 125,978 units, helped by increased output of the X‑TRAIL for overseas markets, especially Europe, and higher output of the Infiniti G35 (Skyline in Japan) for North America, among other models.
Overseas production climbed 13.6% to 143,202 units, owing to surging production in the U.S. where output rose 34.1% to 56,278 units. The increase was fueled by strong demand for the Quest minivan and the new Titan full-size pickup truck. Production in the U.K., however, declined 3.5% to 29,532 units, as output of the Micra (March in Japan) has leveled off since its rollout in January 2003.
First Half of CY 2004
Nissan's global production grew 11.9% compared with the same period last year to 1,606,404 units, a record high for a six-month period.
Domestic production edged up 1.2% to 743,692 units, while overseas production surged 23.1% to 862,712 units.
In the U.S., production jumped 70.7% compared with the first half of last year to 365,091 units, propelled largely by brisk sales of the Altima, Quest and Titan. Production in Mexico slipped 2.9% to 151,353 units due to lower domestic sales of the Sentra (Sunny in Japan). In the U.K., production increased 2.2% to 172,185 units. Robust sales of the Primastar commercial vehicle boosted production in Spain by 15.2% to 68,861 units.
Sales
Nissan's domestic registrations in June fell 8.7% from a year ago to 58,420 units, due mainly to lower sales of the March and the Teana that were rolled out in February last year. Nissan's share of the domestic registered vehicle market edged down 0.6 percentage point to 18.1%.
Domestic sales, including minicars, fell 0.7% to 65,864 units. However, Nissan's domestic market share, including the minicar segment, edged up 0.4 percentage point to 13.7%.
In the U.S., sales rose 13.5% to 78,108 units. Nissan brand sales climbed 14.5% to 68,248 units, boosted by higher sales of the Titan. Sales of Nissan's Infiniti luxury brand advanced 7.1% to 9,860 units.
In Europe, sales were up 3.4% to 52,471 units.
First Half of CY 2004
Nissan's domestic registrations in the first six months of 2004 declined 5% compared with the same period last year to 391,708 units. The drop was largely due to lower sales of the March and the Teana. Nissan's share of the domestic registered vehicle market dipped 0.4 percentage point to 19.3%.
However, domestic sales, including minicars, increased 1.3% to 434,779 units. Nissan's domestic market share, including the minicar segment, edged up 0.1 percentage point to 14.3%.
In the U.S., sales surged 25.5% to 472,785 units, setting a new record high for a half-year period. Nissan brand sales grew 27.8% to 410,475 units, propelled by robust sales of the Altima, Quest, Titan and other models. Infiniti brand sales also posted a large increase, rising 12.2% to 62,310 units due to the continued popularity of the Infiniti G35 and the Infiniti FX45/FX35 models.
In Europe, sales rose 6.6% to 285,164 units, driven by strong demand for the Micra and the X‑TRAIL.
Exports from Japan
Nissan's exports in June advanced 4.5% from a year earlier to 62,915 units. Shipments to North America soared 23.8% to 25,620 units, thanks in part to increased exports of the Murano and the Infiniti G35. Exports to Europe, however, fell 1.2% to 10,824 units.
First Half of CY 2004
Nissan's exports in the first six months of 2004 year grew 6.5% compared with the same period last year to 359,453 units.
Exports to North America, however, decreased 9.9% to 129,942 units, mainly due to lower shipments of the Murano and the Infiniti FX45/FX35 compared to levels when the models were first launched.
In contrast, exports to Europe jumped 24.1% to 62,700 units, boosted by strong demand for the X‑TRAIL.
Exports to other regions were also substantially higher compared with the first half of 2003, as shipments to Latin America rose 22% to 28,873 units, shipments to Oceania grew 11.8% to 39,082 units, shipments to Asia soared 33.8% to 54,268 units and shipments to the Middle East increased 11.2% to 38,388 units.
